Watts Believe was founded in 2022 by two Watts natives, Cartashia Perkins and Sherika Simms. Both founders have deep roots in the community and have dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life in their neighborhood.

Founding and Early Years: Perkins and Simms established Watts Believe after witnessing firsthand the various systemic issues that plagued their community, including economic disparities, lack of educational resources, and environmental challenges. The organization emerged from a series of community meetings and discussions where residents expressed their concerns and needs.

Initial Projects: In its early years, Watts Believe focused on addressing immediate community needs through several key initiatives:

• Youth Mentorship Programs: These programs aimed to provide guidance and support to at-risk youth, helping them navigate educational and career paths.
• Financial Literacy Workshops: These workshops were designed to help families manage their finances better and achieve financial stability.
• Community Health Fairs: These fairs increased access to healthcare services for residents.

Growth and Expansion: As Watts Believe gained traction, it expanded its projects and partnerships. Collaborations with local schools, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies allowed the organization to increase its reach and impact. Notable initiatives included:

• Advocacy for Affordable Housing: Working to ensure that all residents had access to safe and affordable housing.
• Sustainable Living Practices: Promoting environmental sustainability through community gardens and energy efficiency workshops.

Environmental Justice Initiatives: In 2022, Watts Believe launched the "Green Watts" initiative to address environmental justice issues. This comprehensive program included:

• Tree Planting Projects: Improving air quality and beautifying the neighborhood.
• Solar Panel Knowledge Providing resources and information about solar panels.

Anti-Displacement Efforts: To combat the negative impacts of gentrification, Watts Believe has been proactive in anti-displacement efforts. The organization partnered with legal aid groups to support tenants facing eviction and advocated for policies promoting affordable housing.

Organizational Capacity: Watts Believe has developed robust organizational capacity over the years, gaining extensive experience in grant management and program evaluation. This expertise has enabled the organization to secure and effectively manage funding from various federal, state, and private sources, ensuring the sustainability and impact of its programs.
